Failed communication Management Conflicts: Airbus was formed by a combination of 16 companies from 4 different countries. The project demanded integration for which reorganization was planned with introduction of new administrative structures where top managers were located from each of the 16 divisions. However, this increased conflicts in management. By the year 2005, management problems escalated with the battle of ownership between Airbus, EADS, DaimlerChrysler, Enders and Forgeard. Different customers demanded different functions in the aircraft(Clarke, 2006). Design complexities: A major reason behind delays was the level of complication in manufacturing design caused by the use of 100,000 different wires running over 330 miles and performing 1,150 functions. In designing the wiring harnesses, Hamburg plant used older version of CATIA while Toulouse used the updated version causing compatibility issues. Wiring had to be redone because of which costs were escalated by $6 billion(Shore, 2009). Analysis Of Key Issues The Airbus product suffered major delays after its launch in 2005. Initial delays were caused different software was used for installing 330 miles of wiring than those used for British and French producers. The first production was delivered in October 2007 to Singapore Airlines. Originally planned for 2006, the first planes suffered three major delays, with the launch customer, Singapore Airlines, finally getting hold of the first production model in October 2007 followed by Emirates with 20 planes and Quantas with 15 planes delivered by 2008(Drfler Baumann, 2014). In a Quantas A380 plane, one of the engines exploded after takeoff and the flight had to take an emergency landing. In 2011, one of the Quantas flight faced an oil problem. In 2012, investigations were made on 68 aircrafts by European Aviation Safety Agency that revealed problems like cracks in the wing components and lack of grounding. In subsequent months, there were more delays and the delay extended to 2 years. By 2007, the company could deliver only 9 out of 25 aircrafts promised. The delivery delays resulted into reduction in earnings by 2 billion and reduction in the share value by 26%(BBC, 2012). Aftermath Dealing With Project Failure The ambitious project failed as the production completion was delayed by 2 years that resulted into a loss of confidence of stakeholders and customers of airbus. Moreover, the development costs escalated to $13 billion which the company could not recoup anytime before 2017. The market for such a huge aircraft was not sufficient as it demanded more of fuel-efficient jets. By 2005, the company could get only 172 orders as compared to 354 orders received by Boeing for its Dreamliner(Rochfort, 2016). Lesson Learned It is not always the technical problems that is the main cause of failure Organizational culture is very important aspect in any project and affects its success majorly. A positive organizational culture is needed for project success that is characterized by multiple factors including identity, team emphasis, management focus, unit integration, control, risk tolerance, reward criteria, conflict tolerance, means versus ends orientation, and open system focus. Airbus failed to establish member identity, achieve unit integration and tolerance for conflicts. Boeing 787 Dreamliner Case Background Dreamliner 1 was introduced by Boeing in January 2003 with a latest design of the airplane that was to build a fuel efficient jetliner made of composite material. The Dreamliner was a success by Boeing with 20% increase in fuel efficiency, better in-flight experience, reduced maintenance costs and 30,000 to 40,000 pounds lighter in weight. The company bagged orders for 500 aircrafts within 3 years of the launch of 787 Dreamliner. The project involved longest delays suffered, escalated costs, loss of revenues, loss of customers, loss of investor confidence and reshuffling of management which made it a failure for management. An initial 6 months delay itself caused extra costs of $1 billion and revenues reduction of $3.5 billion. As the problems escalated, the delays were increased to 3 years and the cost escalated manifolds(Denning, 2013). Factors That Contributed To Failure Supply chain problems: The count of fasteners dropped in case of this project which led to the lack of enthusiasm by the vendors to make the deliveries on time. They were looking on larger deliveries and it contributed in the complexities in supply chains and associated delays(Shenhar, et al., 2016). Outsourcing Complexities: The role of Boeing was limited to general design and assembling while 90% of manufacturing activities were outsourced. Major suppliers of Boeing such as Spirit AeroSystems and Vought Aircraft Industries from USA, Alenia Aeronautica from Italy, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Fuji Heavy Industries, and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries from Japan further outsourced the contracts to sub-contractors. As a result, only 16% of the aircraft structure could be completed after receiving the first supply. There were also more problems with sub-suppliers like Brake Control Monitoring System (BCMS) developed by Crane that had serious feedback problems and a designing of code was demanded. This lead to an additional cost of $18.9 million for Boeing as Crane was not willing to take the ownership of risk(MarketLine , 2012). High Cost of Development: The initial cost of development was itself high caused by several desired of Boeing such as reduction in risks, a system integrator role, and availability of suppliers willing to invest in development. To achieve this objective, Boeing decided to use GSP model. Lack of competency: The Company chose to play a role of a system integrator which was not its core competency. This led to mismanagement issues and conflicts(Elahi, et al., 2014). Analysis Of Key Issues Major causes of delays on the project included: Alternative suppliers should have been selected in advance to deal with the scenarios associated with lack of enthusiasm for orders of fasteners and likewise. Because of multilayered supply chain structure that involved a large number of suppliers caused delays as they acted independently and made deliveries with their own speeds. Outsourcing of core competencies and increased reliance on the suppliers. Causes behind increase in the costs include: Lack of training and competency of workers caused rework that incurred extra costs Initial development cost was already more and with the first six months delay, the company invested more into project for speeding up the work despite the losses faced. Aftermath Dealing With Project Failure Production delays had many consequences on the company and some of these were huge increase in the cost and reduction in the stock prices post first delay announcement. To deal with the project costs, the company decided to use cost cutting to save on the expenses. The company was more ignorant about the problems at the initial stages as they were minor. The company invested more to speed up the work. Lesson Learned Identification of core competency is essential as it can affect the success of the project Using existing core competency is always more beneficial than creating a new competency to deal with a project. Developing new core competencies can result into the reduction in the strength of the existing core competencies of an organization If high value adding functions of a project are transferred to suppliers such as designing and manufacturing can lead to increase in dependency over suppliers Recommendations For Murasaki Aircraft Corporation (MAC) Based on the lessons learned from the two cases, certain recommendations can be made for MAC such as: Identification of core competencies and development of strategies accordingly with selection of tasks to be outsourced. Necessary to gain buy-in from the staff as well as from the top management for which the company must clearly communicate the cultural and procedural changes as well as benefits to each stakeholder and staff member on additional responsibilities and support. Training schedule and requirements must be planned in advance. Phased and iterative development procedure so that the bugs can be detected in a timely manner. Improved vendor selection process based upon the past experience, market trends, customer comments and reviews. Advanced requirement gathering and stakeholder analysis activities shall be carried out. An advanced risk management plan and strategy shall be in place. Conclusions The objective of the report was to ensure that the company did not make similar mistakes on the project as done by the two cases discussed including Boeing and Airbus. Both project saw major delays in deliveries and cost overruns that made the projects unprofitable. Other issues included lack of buy-in from the management, incompetence of the project organization, inaccurate estimation or inefficient designing. Some recommendations made for MAC included use of core competencies for in-house development, outsourcing of activities that are not core to the company, training to employees on equipments, use of iterative methodology for development, in-depth requirement gathering, and use of strong assessment procedure for project vendors and contractors. My Beliefs Essays - Capital Punishment, Law, Penology, Social Policy
My Beliefs The idea of putting another human being to death is hard to completely imagine. I think the emotions involved in carrying out a death sentence on another person, regardless of how much they deserve it, is beyong my own understanding. I know it must be painful and sickening. However, this act is sometimes necessary and it is our responsability as a society to see that it is done. There are many reasons why I am in favor of the death penalty. It prevents the murderer from ever murdering again, it removes the burden from taxpayers, it is an efficient way to lower crime in this country, and it is also a good punishment because people in this country deserve to feel safe. I feel strongly toward using the death penalty as punishment for unspeakable crimes. I feel that it is an obstacle for criminal activity because of its severity and it will never allow a murderer to kill again and destroy another family. I do, however, feel that restrictions should be put on its uses. Not all crimes deserve the death penalty. Let the punishment fit the crime. If a criminal performs an intentional cruel murder he should be put to death. It is that simple. If the convicted offender shows no remorse for his actions, then the decision should be even easier. Repeat offenders and people who enjoy killing do not deserve to walk on our streets. The death penalty is the only method that completely separates murderers from our society. Supporters of the death penalty ask themselves the same question, "why should I have to pay to support a murderer for the rest of his life? Why not execute them and save our society the cost of their keep?" I don't think it is fair for us to pay so they can have all the luxuries they have in prison. Shouldn't they be miserable and have to work for the bare necessities, just like the working class has to? Crime in today's world has become more gruesome with the times. With the crimes comes jail, so more jails are being built for the prisoners. More criminals are being sent to jail and getting the death penalty. Some feel that the death penalty is also a gruesome act of murder, but people who commit crimes should get what they deserve and if that's the death penalty then they should get it, mostly because they are taking up our space, time, and our money. We all live in a society with the same basic rights. We have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness with equal opportunities. When someone intentionally and outregously attacks the basis of our society by murdering another human being, robbing them of all they are, and all they will ever be, then I think that person can no longer be a part of this society.

The One in The Shadows ââ¬â Scarlet Letter Essay Free Online Research Papers The One in The Shadows Scarlet Letter Essay Nathaniel Hawthorneââ¬â¢s The Scarlet Letter portrays a wide cast of characters in his story of sin and human emotion, from the tragic and sorrowful Reverend Dimmesdale to the otherworldly, elfishly mischievous little Pearl. More than that, however, is the creation of Roger Chillingworth, a man of ugly visage and even more insidious intent. Not only is he the antagonist and the most fascinating character of the novel, but he serves as a powerful symbol for the darker and almost disturbingly ironic side of society and human actions. Roger Chillingworth first makes his appearance just as Hester Prynne, the protagonist and his wayward wife, is being publicly humiliated before the jeering crowd, standing on the scaffold with the newly born Pearl clutched in her arms. Hawthorne introduces him in the company of a Native American- having emerged from the forest, a point which will be discussed later- as a stranger; and when he ââ¬Å"found the eyes of Hester Prynne fastened on his own, and saw that she appeared to recognize him, he slowly and calmly raised his finger, made a gesture with it in the air, and laid it on his lipsâ⬠(Hawthorne 59). Not only does she acknowledge the appearance of this character during the hour of her humiliation for having succumbed to temptation, but his gesture of silence is carried throughout the book in the form of his taking on a pseudonym to hide his true identity and Hester keeping his secret. In the face of the Puritan society, he tells her with no little malice to keep the truth concealed, away from prying minds.Hawthorne describes Chillingworth as an old, misshapen man with ââ¬Å"eyes, burning blue and ominous, like the reflection of a furnaceâ⬠(125). They say that eyes are the windows to the soul; what kind of soul, then, would dwell in a broken and repulsive body yet whose eyes bear an unnatural light? Though Lucifer was beautiful the hour before he fell, he became a beast of both fearsome appearance and twisted intent, much like Chillingworth. Whereas the beautiful Hester did indeed sin, she did not do so out of evil or ill intent; she seems more lost than anything, much like her lover Dimmesdale. Chillingworth is driven by a desire for vengeance and reparations for his own wounded pride at having been unable to hold the interest of a woman. He is the result of hatred and rage forged into a faà §ade that hides amongst the Puritans like an assassin amongst children, a symbol of the truth held so long behind lies and half-truths it has been warped beyond recognition. Here is where the irony of the society comes into play- Hester, rich and lustrous and young, condemned by the people of the town, and Roger Chillingworth, ugly and aloof but intelligent and learned, trusted and respected for his status while he slowly poisons the mind of Dimmesdale and his own soul becomes this hard black object that could put the worst of sinners to shame. Hester even makes a case for this during their short tà ªtetà ªte in the prison: ââ¬Å"ââ¬â¢Art thou like the Black Man that haunts the forest round about us? Hast thou enticed me into a bond that will prove the ruin of my soul?ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËNot thy soul,ââ¬â¢ he answered, with another smile. ââ¬ËNo, not thine!ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ (74). There are some decidedly cruel intonations behind his words, hinting at the dark symbolism in his character. It takes a surprisingly long while for the town to even begin to suspect anything about him; even the man he boards with, Dimmesdale himself. Upon finding something incriminating upon the chest of the priest, Hawthorne says that Chillingworthââ¬â¢s revelation is so powerful that ââ¬Å"had a man seen old Roger Chillingworth, at that moment of his ecstasy, he would have no need to ask how Satan comports himself when a precious human soul is lost to heaven and won into his kingdomâ⬠(135). When he speaks, there seems to be a double entendre within every word, saying nothing and yet revealing everything with a subtle hint. He is ââ¬Ëserpent-tonguedââ¬â¢, yet another reference to the Devil. Though there are several minor settings within the novel, the two largest and most oft mentioned is the town and the forest. This settles nicely into the idea of duality; instinct versus civilization, good versus evil, order versus chaos. Within the town, everything that happens has to do with sin, the scarlet letter, and Godââ¬â¢s will, while the forest is home to where Hester spoke with Dimmesdale about running away, where herself and others are free to act as they will. So, in the town everyone plays nicely, and in the big scary woods people can dance or talk or plot in a neat little package that symbolizes how we truly feel versus how we choose to act. As mentioned previously, Chillingworth enters the story from the forest, and from there while living in the town he grows progressively more determined and unstable. This purpose in Chillingworth is further shown at the death of Arthur Dimmesdale, in the changes wrought ââ¬Å"in the appearance and demeanor of the old man k nown as Roger Chillingworth. All of his strength and energy- all his vital and intellectual force- seemed at once to desert him; insomuch that he positively withered up, shriveled away, and almost vanished from mortal sightâ⬠(254). Now that this great secret had been revealed- the clandestine affair between the priest and Hester- there was no longer a need for an illusionary truth. The ââ¬Ëdarkââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëuncontrollable wildââ¬â¢ had met the ordered, carefully structured society, and endured. Hawthorneââ¬â¢s character Roger Chillingworth, though the darkest, was by far the most interesting. His representation of mankindââ¬â¢s shadowed side has proven to be a powerful metaphor in Hawthorneââ¬â¢s tale of revenge and irony and unfulfilled love. She kept on assuring me that everyone has jitters on her first day including herself and there was nothing to be anxious about. She was very comforting and accommodating in my mistakes and rather than reprimand me for them, she was quick to give me a break to recollect my thoughts and calm down. She was a good listener and she often listened to the patients and the other nurses patiently. In case of any squabbles, she would listen keenly to all sides before making any judgment. This was unlike my previous supervisors who were quick to punish and pick sides so as to deal quickly with the matter and move on. She extended the same servant leadership to the rest of the hospital staff including the subordinate staffs without discrimination (Spears, 2010). Her main goal other than see her patients received the best health care and recovered was ensuring the growth of other people. This she did through making people realize their inner ability and strength and how they can use that to further their personal and professional development. It is this leadership skill in her that made me consider furthering my education and she pushed me and encouraged me to do so. Most individuals in power positions but who are not servant leaders are not concerned about empowering those under them. They are not really concerned about the future of an employee as long as they perform their daily chores as required of them. Having a leader who is therefore committed to growth of the employees was therefore a new thing to me to not only see but understand as well and this made me appreciate my supervisor even more. Understanding Of The Theoretical Concept Essay In this essay, my objective is to demonstrate my understanding of the theoretical concepts and techniques used in hypnotic inductions and to discuss my reasons for believing that it is best that an induction is personalised as well as the reasons why they may not always be the best strategy. Research shows that words make up 7% of our communication, tone and volume make up 38% and our body language make up 55%. In order to practice hypnosis, an individuals eyes are closed and the aim is to relax the body completely, leaving only words, tone and volume to communicate, this makes these factors very important in the process of hypnosis therefore using these factors right is the key to a successful induction. To my understanding, a personalised induction is a hypnotic induction screed that is tailored to suit a specific inividual. There are 2 induction styles that are used when personalising an induction, those are; the permissive technique and the authoritarian technique. In the permissive technique, a softer tone of voice is issued to draw the subject into a state of relaxation. With this technique, the subject and the hypnotherapist are equal partners in the process of hypnosis. More imaginative suggestions are used and greater responsibility is given to the hypnotic subject to create the right state that is needed to achieve results. Subjects who are most responsive to this technique are individuals who are very imaginative an creative because more specific imagery is used in the induction. This technique was devised by Milton Erickson in the 1900s, It is particularly used in subjects who are gaining to reach goals, such as people who want to become more successful in their occuption or career. The Authoritarian technique is a more direct and authority based technique. Its purpose is to establish control over the subject. In this, the hypnotist commands the individual to respond in a specific way. Repititious commands are given in order to alter the subjects behavior. This technique was made famous by Franz Mesmer. Subjects who are most responsive to the authortarian technique are those who have great respect for authoritarian figures, such as teachers, employers and police officers. This technique is best used on individuals who are suffering with problems that began from childhood which usually originates as a result of a response to an authority figure. The authoritarian and permissive technique can also be personalised to an individual by identifying which type of suggestions an indiviual will best respond to and is most comfortable with. These are called modalities. There are 3 main types of modalities; visual(sight), auditory(hearing)and Kinaesthetic(feeling). There are many ways to identify an individuals modality. Their interests, eye movements when using their imagination, tone of voice, the words and phrases they use when speaking and even their body type. Individuals who respond best to the visual modality induction are usually very creative and are interested in drawing, design and television. A visual person When speaking would usually use wording like; looks good to me or the future looks bright. Or they may use more color references than persons with other modalities. When using their imagination, their eyes would go up and to the right. Their voice tone is generally faster but in a high, clear tone. An auditory individual loves music and talking on the phone and find unpleasant and undesirable sounds highly intolerable. They would frequently use phrases like that sounds good or I hear what youre saying. Their eyes would go right when imagining something. Their voice is usually an even paced tone. Individuals who would respond best to Kineasthetic suggestions would usually use such wording like; i know how you feel, i cant put my finger on it or heated argument. Their eye movement when using their imagination would be down to the right. Their tone of voice is usually a soft, deep tone and speaks with pauses in speech. A hypnotherapist would usually identify the best modality to use by conversating with the client, being sure to listen to the client as this provides more doorways into their subconscious, as paying attention to the things that relax them, the way they process experiences and the style of behaviour that they will likely best react to. The therapist would also, to be more acurate, determine the clients moality through the use of rapport during the initial consultation. This helps the therapist to become more aware of any fears, phobias and illnesses of the subject.The results would then be used in the development of a personalised induction or in some cases it would actually prove that a personalised induction is not even necessary as the indivduals case may be basic enough to decide on the option of the use an already written or recorded script which would be a time saver. In one sense, we use personalised inductions because people are individuals and deserve the personal touch. However, it it because we recognise that people are individuals and are unique, that we recognise that an initial consultation cant tell you everything you ever need to know about someone. A personalised induction can presume too much. I do however believe that after a rapport a hypnotherapist cannot go wrong with personalising a screed because not all screeds are very effective in all circumstances. Each induction tends to be more effective in different situations and with different subjects, for example; The authoritarian technique would be very effective when used in a private session when dealing with an individual who is struggling with a bad habit which may have resulted from a past experience with an authoritarian figure, for eg. smoking, drinking or over eating. This is because the authoritarian technique would be used to take an indivdual back to their past to discover where their problem originated and to help the individual in understanding that incident and therefore let go of the behavior that compensates for it. In this situation, a personalised induction is more effective. However, The authoritarian style, would not be the best option to utilise in a group session, because whereas there are some individuals with which the authoritarian approach would be very effective, not all individuals respond very well with recieving a command. This could cause some individuals to become very uncomfortable which would make it difficult, if not impossible, to get some individuals into a trance. As a result, the hypnotherapy session would be very unsuccessful as a group treatment. I also believe that more direct techniques, in contrast, are powerful and often effective but often more difficult to make effective use of, often very narrow in their impact and they involve an unecessary element of submission, helplessness and reluctant agreement on the part of the subject. Personalised inductions may, sometimes be less effective with permissive suggestions because in this technique an individual is presented ideas in a carefully crafted general manner, he or she tends to process the incoming words on the basis of what he or she expects to hear, wants to hear, needs to hear. Thus, because of indirect techniques, the listeners own mind assures that suggestions are personally form-fitted to his or her needs and expectations so in this case, personalisation is not necessary. I also believe that it is best to personalise a screed because people are different in many ways. They have different likes and dislikes, cultural backgrounds and experiences therfore people have different perspectives, traits and outlooks. Personalising an induction takes these factors into account, thus helping to avoid making mistakes with a client. These factors are also what determines an individuals modalities and the more effective induction style for them, which is very important in developing a sucessful screed. For instance, some individuals may find recieving a demand when the authoritarian technique is used to be very offensive and it may even be processed as agression. Childrenââ¬â¢s behaviors and reactions have always been so interesting to me. Studying Erikson, Piaget, and Kohlbergââ¬â¢s different theories on human development has given me a much deeper understanding of these behaviors. Although their theories are different, they do share three assumptions according to an article on SparkNotes.com: 1. People pass through stages in a specific order, with each stage building on capacities developed in the previous stage. 2. Stages are related to age. 3. Development is discontinuous, with qualitatively different capacities emerging in each stageâ⬠("Psychology/Development," 2012, p. 1). While studying these three theorists it has affected my own idea of human development in two ways. Additionally, my view of how a patient has been raised has affected my nursing care. I admit that when I care for a child, a majority of the time I silently blame the parents for the improper actions of the child. It is easy for me to forgo disciplining an ad olescent patient. I often say to myself, it is not the childââ¬â¢s fault and excuse them for their behaviors, mainly because I believed that is how they were raised and they donââ¬â¢t know better. After learning about Erik Eriksonââ¬â¢s theory on development, I realized that a childââ¬â¢s development is not solely dependent on the way the child was raised by their parents. There are other contributing factors in development, according to an article that compares Eriksonââ¬â¢s views versus Freudââ¬â¢s titles Erik Erikson. McLeod (2013) states that Erikson, ââ¬Å"emphasized the role of culture and societyâ⬠, (p. 1) in the development of personality. After studying Erikson it has changed my understanding of why children behave and react in certain situations. In McLeodââ¬â¢s (2013) article it also mentions... ...n Simply Psychology, ââ¬Å"children at this age like to explore the world around them and they are constantly learning about their environmentâ⬠(McLeod, 2013, figure 2). Everything dangerous was kept in locked drawers and cabinet, so I thought the child would be safe roaming around the small exam room. Also, the incident involving the childââ¬â¢s eye was traumatizing to him and after the sutures are placed it would cause even more trauma. I explained to the parents that in order to instill autonomy into this child, they must allow the child to explore to overcome any fears that may be brought upon from this traumatic event. That is just one example of how I utilized Eriksonââ¬â¢s theories into my nursing practice. I will continue to bring it into my plan of care, because I now have an understanding of why children react and behave in a certain way towards different situations.

People who make decisions based on emotion and justify those decisions with logic afterwards are poor decision makers Essay
The debate of whether to follow emotions or logic is a complex one. As the given statement seems too strong in suggesting that all those who make decisions based on emotion are poor decision-makers, it may be warranted to discuss both the positive and negative role emotions and logic play in our decision making process. In certain cases, decisions based on emotion can result in undesirable consequences. There exist several examples of impulsive shoppers who get consumed by the emotion to acquire and buy something, and consequently, end up with a purchase they later realize wasnââ¬â¢t required at all. Advertisers and sales personnel, aware of this tendency, often play with this emotion to their advantage. A more severe example could be of substance abusers and addicts, who, in a moment of high emotion and drama, triggered by an adrenaline rush, make decisions they might need to regret later. Gamblers, guided (or, misguided, rather) by the emotion of avarice and the ââ¬Å"highâ⬠of winning could end up impoverishing themselves and their dependents. One also comes across people who make the wrong dietary choices, to satiate their taste buds, thereby posing a danger to long-term health. The examples discussed above present the seamier side of decisions based on emotion; however, it should be recognized that certain situations require that decisions be guided not by logic, but by impulse. The adage ââ¬Å"sieze the dayâ⬠suggests that one should let the heart rule over the head, and grab an opportunity with both hands. In other words, instinct and intuition can aid in better decision-making sometimes, rather than mere dependence on logic. There are several examples of business honchos who claim to have taken risks, guided by their hearts, and reaped benefits of such decisions. In contrast, there are others who lament the loss of opportunity because they ââ¬Å"thought too muchâ⬠and were hesitant to follow their heart. In short, decisions based on emotion may not always lead to wrong choices. Just as the brain and the heart work in tandem to keep the body functioning smoothly, one may assert that both emotion and logic are complements to each other, and facilitate the decision making process. Decisions made on the basis of logic alone may not work out always, while choices guided by emotion and instinct could very often work wonders, and hence shouldnt be disregarded all the time.
